Bought 2 and they agree!

I bought two of these to check consistency of temperature in various parts of our new house. Before I deployed them, I set them side-by-side near the thermostat and all three agreed. Then I moved these to two different rooms, which confirmed my belief (and convinced my husband) that we had a few cold rooms. We’ve replaced a few windows, reinsulated the crawl space and set the furnace blower to run all the time; voila – comfortable house!

Works well.. Troubleshooting hint…

I was prepared to write a bad review for this wireless sensor, but did a little additional troubleshooting before clicking to submit the review.

Yes, I replaced the sensor battery, switched channels, reset the unit and moved the receiver closer to it and it still didn’t register on the receiver. Then I decided to check the batteries in the receiver. Not dead, but low. The receiver still showed the inside temperature and the atomic clock was working, but a fresh set of batteries for the receiver did the trick.

Note: If the sensor batteries die, you may need to pop the batteries on the base unit to get it to reset and find the sensor again (replacing the base unit batteries may not be necessary).

It may seem like a difficult task, but it is genuinely finelooking easy if somebody tells you how to do it. You will need a pair of wire strippers and a little screwdriver.

Where to Buy the Right Wire

The firstborn step is to buy the right wire. Sprinkler wire is sold at hardware stores and sprinkler supply stores. If you need a lot of wire, it is better to shop at the sprinkler supply store. Sprinkler wire is an 18 gauge wire.

Number of Strands

A strand is the same thing as one wire. You will have to get one more strand than the number of valves being used. For example, a seven valve system would use an eight stranded wire (eight wires).

Solenoids

There is one solenoid per valve. Each solenoid has two wires already connected to it. Pick one wire from each solenoid and twist them tightly together. It doesn’t matter which solenoid wire you pick.

White Wire or Common Wire

It’s an unwritten rule that the white wire will be the mutual wire. Stick by this rule to prevent confusedness by others working on your system. It’s called mutual because it is used on all valves. The white wire will be hooked up to the big bundle of solenoid wires. For example, if you have four valves there will be four solenoid wires and one white mutual wire all hooked together with a wire connector.

Pick your Colors

Once the white wire is connected to one wire from each solenoid, pick any color you wish and connect it with a wire nut to the other solenoid wire. On a four valve scheme you might pick blue, black, green, and red for each valve and run the white wire to each valve as well. In total, for four valves, you will need five strands of 18 gauge sprinkler wire. Keeping track of colors will help you know which timer station will turn on which valve.

Run the Wire Back to the Clock

Take the wire to the timer. To get wire into the garage, it is helpful to use a hammer drill and a good deal of foam sealant around the wire hole.

Hooking Up the Timer

You will need a little screwdriver for most timers. Connect the white wire to the terminal that says C. Connect the colored wires to the further and added terminals. It doesn’t matter what order the colored wires are installed. You may want to have the wires in a sure order for your convenience, but it’s not required. For example you may want station 1-3 to be the front yard only.

You will also need to hook up the power. Connect the power pack to the ac terminals. If you are using an outdoor timer, make sure you have a pigtail rather of an ac adapter.

Final Tip

Most contractors use silicone filled wire nuts. The theory is that they keep out water and make the connection last longer. However, galore landscapers disagree. The silicone keeps out water but interferes with making a good tight connection. For this reason, we commend using regular wire nuts. The uttermost wire connection is a regular orange wire nut in a grease filled cap. They are made for direct inter and somewhat over kill for sprinkler boxes, but if you want quality they will do an amazing job.

Super frustrating.

I can’t really say if this thing works or not. The software STUNK. It took us forever to get everything loaded and then when we went to pick our area, we couldn’t find it. They didn’t have ANYWHERE close to us. They only had one location in all of Florida. So we had to return it. As ususal, Amazon rocked and was great about the return.

Insta Not Instant

I made the mistake of buying one of these directly from Oregon Scientific rather than Amazon. I was unable to install the software with a Vista Ultimate operating system, Incredibly, the list of home cities does not include New York City – just imagine the largest city in the United States and one of the most famous cities in the world is ignored by Oregon Scientific. I could not get Oregon Scientific on the phone. Sent email. Three or four days later, without a response, I was able to get through on the telephone. The woman knew nothing about the product. She said it was not supposed to work with Vista. She was surprised that the manual said it did. She was not surprised to hear that New York City was not included in the list of home cities. She said the engineers had been told to include all state capitals. She was rather surprised to learn that Albany and not New York City is the capital of New York State. She said that an engineer would call me back. Two weeks have passed without a call. I threw the thing out.

A truly hideous product

I got the I600 for my wife about a year and a half ago, and I have never been able to get it to work for more than a week or so. First, it had software that would go into an endless loop (“There is a newer version of this software” message would come up continuously, even after you downloaded the new software), and then it couldn’t find the computer which from which it was supposed to get unpdated weather data. Sometimes, if I completely reloaded everything, it would work for a few days, and then stop again. Loading the software on other computers failed too. And writing to the company never got a response.

This really is one of the very worst products that I have ever purchased! I would never buy another Oregon Scientific product.
